Elvis

When Elvis Presley came on the music scene he was a big hit! At that time I was enjoying the good life living in Cocoli, Canal Zone and the kids needed a music idol. Well, Elvis did this and more! In fact for most of us Elvis still lives in his music. Back then most jukeboxes featured 45's and you could always a find a dozen or so Elvis's songs to play. Elvis music was always being played on AFRTS-Radio in the 50's. Then Elvis joined the US Army and many of us also wanted to enlist.

But it would be years before any us us did that. Yes, in my book Elvis Presley is indeed the King of Rock'n Roll! Some time later in the early 60's I was traveling with my Uncle Sam in the Navy and our ship pulled into a very small Greek Village. We were on a mercy mission. Our luck the ship's crew got 2-section liberty. The second night I went a shore to check out the place. It was a bit warm that sunny afternoon and the sky was very bright. Well, we went into a small tavern or cantina  and ordered some local beer. As we were enjoying our beer and wetting our whistle, I spotted a jukebox in the corner. I asked the owner if it worked. He said, "One moment and he turned it on."

Guess what almost all the songs on it were by Elvis. Sure Elvis would produced many more hits but that afternoon we had a really good time, listening to Elvis on the jukebox and kicking back.

Today, I still enjoy the King! Yes, although Elvis has left the building, he still remains as one of the most popular singers in the world.  In my book he is still numero uno!
