I served on DD-862 the USS Vogelgesang in 1962. I was a Radarman 3rd Class then. The Vogelgesang was a Gearing Class Destroyer. I transferred off the "Vogie" when it was in the yards in Charlestown Naval Station, Mass. The following pictures will give you some idea of how it was below decks. There was no wasted space.
